Local Parks

Penhold is a great place to be for children and adults alike! There is always something to do with the various parks available.  From the Splash Park to the Athletic Park, visit the green spaces that Penhold has to offer!

Splash Park

The land for the Splash Park was donated by the Town of Penhold.  The train was found at a daycare sale. Air Spray painted the train with airplane paint.  The theme was chosen because of the train that went through town.  Donations were made by Red Deer and District Foundation, Alberta Lotteries-Community Initiatives, and other various companies and individuals listed on the sign at the Splash Park.  Recycling rubber was put in by a grant from Alberta Recycling.

Located on Lincoln Street, beside Jesse Duncan School, the Splash Park offers a much-needed break from the summer heat.  Children can enjoy playing in the various water apparatuses while parents supervise.

Opens second weekend of June and closes end of the long weekend of September.

Please be considerate when using the Splash Park as this is a re-circulating water system and all water that goes down the drain must be treated.  Unwanted substances can cause difficulties with the treatment system resulting in shut downs.  If the system is down it is generally due to an unbalance in the chemical treatment system or clogged filters.

Rules

  • Parents do not leave children unattended
  • No abusive language or objectional behaviour
  • No littering, please use garbage cans
  • No pets allowed, leashed or unleashed
  • No wheeled items (ie: bicycles, strollers, skateboards, scooters),  should be on splash pad
  • Washrooms are located in the Rink Shelter

Tranquility Park

The idea for a memorial park came after one of our long term residents had said he wanted to build a cemetery for residents in Penhold.  It was looked into and it was deemed the area that he would have liked to develop for a cemetery was not suitable under environmental requirements.

It was suggested to him that a memorial park could be formed, and that would at least give residents a quiet area to remember their loved ones that had passed.

In 2005, planning for Tranquility Park began and a committee was formed. The focus of the park was to create a peaceful area in memory of loved ones who have passed on. Plans for the park included walking paths, a creek that would have a fountain within it, and a bridge that would cross over the creek. Trees, shrubs, benches, flag poles, time capsule and signage were other items discussed.

The committee thought that trees, shrubbery and benches might be items that residents would like to donate to the park in memory of their loved ones.  The committee also chose the name 'Tranquility Park'.

The site chosen for the park is close to the reservoir as there is already power on site and it is adjacent to the highway through town.

The bridge steel work was donated anonymously for the enhancement of the park area.  Donations were received for the bridge completion. A liner for the creek, trees, shrubs, a time capsule and a bench were graciously donated from residents.  Grants have been received from Alberta Lotteries and Red Deer & District Foundation.  The Penhold Lions Catering Group made a bench donation to the park.

To date, the town has used grants and town funds to develop the creek with the water fountain, place and finish the bridge over the creek, and erect temporary signage. Some shrubbery has been placed at this time, with work ongoing. The next goal is to put a shrub bed and pathway in place and have the water fountain operational.

Windsor Park

25 years ago the Penhold & District Lions Club put a playground in this area. The Sprecher Family donated the land for this playground. In 2011, a committee was formed with Penhold FCSS and Penhold & District Optimist Club to put in a new playground.

With donations from Penhold & District Lions Club, Penhold & District Optimist Club, and through various fundraisers the equipment was purchased.  Public Works will remove the old equipment and dig out the area. The pea gravel and wood was donated.  The Optimist Clubs and volunteers will put the equipment in, in the Spring of 2012.

With a grant from Red Deer & District Foundation, Penhold & District Optimist Club, Penhold Healthy Living Team, and with various other fundraisers, we were able to purchase three pieces of equipment. The mounts for the equipment was put in, in the Fall of 2011 and the three pieces of equipment will be put in by Spring 2012.
